If you have watercolor
supplies, check with Lenny before you purchase anything additional.
What you already have may be fine. If you have a limited
budget, give paints and paper the highest priority, and
brushes last.. Having the correct paints and paper make the
learning much easier.
Brushes Avoid

No.12 round (natural or synthetic sable)
No 8 round (natural or synthetic)
1 inch flat (natural or synthetic)

Pigments
Many companies offer two series, which differ greatly
in price, a more expensive professional line and an
economical student grade (Academy and Cotman are two to
avoid.).Student grade paints are difficult to work with and
should be avoided.
Remember
that
these
paints will last you a long time, so buy the best you can
afford. There
IS a big difference in quality and color mixing by each
quality paints. I recommend Holbein, Da Vinci and Winsor
Newton which are available in art supply stores, or Daniel
Smith, available by catalog or online
and American Journey available
by catalog or.cheapjoes,com.
If you are in need of all or many colors, click
here for
an easy way to order paints from Cheap Joes.. Keep in mind that different manufacturers sometimes call
similar paints by their own names. If you are in doubt, call
Lenny for advice.
Tube colors are a must. 15ml tubes are much more economical
than the small tubes..

Paper
140-pound Arches Aquaelle cold-pressed paper, either in loose sheets
(preferred) or in block form. Should you use a block, do not purchase
one smaller
than
10 X 14 inches. . Quality paper is
a must, as it makes your task as a learner very much easier. Make certain
that the Arches paper that you buy has a green cover if you purchase
a block. (A block is multiple sheets of paper that are glued together
at the edges into a converient package.). There is a lesser quality paper
available which has some of the same descriptors and can fool you..
- Arches, 140, cold press is what you want. If it is a
block, the cover must be green.
Additional Tools
Palette-There are many varieties available. Be certain that it has at
least the equivalent of 8" x 10" surface of flat mixing space.
A lid that closes tightly is necessary when transporting paints. The
Pike Palette
is
a good one. Cheap Joes has a good one.
Support Surface-16"x23" ,
This can be cut from masonite or a couple of sheets
of foam core taped together. If you want to purchase a
ready made one, get Gator Board. Available at Cheap Joes
online. Michaels also has large sheets of 1/2" thick foam
core board which you can cut down to sixe. If you make
your own board, coat it with clear acrylic medium to make
it water resistant.
2 large bulldog clips to attach paper
to board
Water container-A qt plastic ice cream container will
do.
Small Sponge from the supermarket
Sketchbook with ring binding at least 5"x7"
Pencils HB or #2
Box of Tissue
You do not need to bring the tissues or water container
to class, as I have them.
Supplies available on the web at http://www.cheapjoes.com, http://www.danielsmith.com or
at Crafts and
More, 506 Beach Blvd, 2 blocks west of A1A, Jacksonville
Beach.. Reddi Arts in downtown JAX is a good source of
supplies also.
Michaels and Hobby Lobby
are NOT good places to look for quality supplies.
